Upanayanam is one of the most important Samskaras. "Upa" means 'Close' and "Nayanam" means 'to bring'. Upanayanam means to bring closer to the Guru or Divine. Upanayanam also known as the 'Sacred thread Ceremony' performed to mark the commencement of formal education in the Vaidic tradition. It is an initiation process to learn the scared Gayatri Mantra. Upanayanam ceremony includes the wearing of Yajnopavitam (sacred Thread) on the body.

Gayatri Japa means - let my intellect be inspired by the divine. it is our intellect which blocks the vast divinity from expressing itself fully in life. so the prayer is - May the divine inspire my intellect, may the supreme energy manifest in my life and in my intellect. During Upanayanam three threads signify that one has the responsibility towards knowledge, parents and society. so it signifies carrying our responsibilities

ചോദ്യം : ഒരിക്കൽ ബുദ്ധൻ പറഞ്ഞു, സ്വയം ഉള്ളിലെ വെളിച്ചം ആവുക എന്ന്. അങ്ങനെയെങ്കിൽ ആത്മീയ പ്രക്രിയകളുടെയും, ക്‌ളാസുകളുടെയും ആവശ്യകത എന്താണ്? 

@ശ്രീശ്രീ : നമ്മൾ ബുദ്ധൻ പറഞ്ഞത് കേൾക്കണം. ബുദ്ധൻ നിങ്ങളോടുവന്നു പറയേണ്ടിവന്നു സ്വയം ഉള്ളിലെ വെളിച്ചമാകാൻ. അല്ലെ? അപ്പോൾ അതൊരു പ്രക്രിയയാണ്. ഒരിക്കൽ ഋഷികേശിൽ ഒരു നാല് നില കെട്ടിടം പണിയുകയുണ്ടായി. അതൊരു മലമ്പ്രദേശം ആയതുകൊണ്ട് ചുറ്റും  മൺതിട്ടകൾ    കെട്ടിയിരുന്നു. പണി കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോൾ അതെല്ലാം മാറ്റുകയും  ചെയ്തു. അവ മാറ്റിയപ്പോൾ ആദ്യത്തെ നിലയിലേക്ക് പോകാൻ പടികളില്ലാതെയായി. തിട്ടകൾ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നപ്പോൾ  എല്ലാവരും നടന്നിരുന്നതും സാധനങ്ങൾ കൊണ്ടുപോയിരുന്നതും അതിലൂടെയായിരുന്നു. തിട്ടകൾ മാറ്റിയപ്പോൾ താഴത്തെ നിലയിൽനിന്ന് മുകളിലേക്കുപോകാൻ പറ്റാതെയായി. ഇതുപോലെ ആളുകൾ ഗുരുവിന്റെയും, പ്രക്രിയകളുടെയും ആവശ്യമെന്തെന്നു ചോദിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഈ ചോദ്യത്തിന്റെ  ആവശ്യം എന്താണ്? നിങ്ങൾ ഒരു പക്ഷിയായിരുന്നു നിങ്ങൾക്കു പടികളുടെ ആവശ്യംതന്നെയില്ല. പക്ഷെ ചിറകുകൾ എങ്ങനെ ഉപയോഗിക്കണമെന്ന് അറിയണം. എങ്ങനെ പറക്കാമെന്നു പക്ഷികൾ പഠിക്കുന്നു. അതിനു അവർക്കു പരിശീലനം ആവശ്യമാണ്. ഒരു പക്ഷിക്ക് ചുറ്റും മറ്റു  പക്ഷികൾ ഇല്ലായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ , പൂച്ചകളെയും പൂച്ചക്കുട്ടികളെയും മാത്രമാണ് കണ്ടിരുന്നതെങ്കിൽ പക്ഷികൾ ഒരിക്കലും ചചിറകുകൾ അടിക്കാൻ പഠിക്കുകയും പറക്കുകയുമില്ലായിരുന്നു. നമ്മുടെ ആശ്രമത്തിൽ ഒരു കുതിരയുണ്ട്. അതു പശുത്തൊഴുത്തിലാണ്. കുതിരക്കു പശുകുട്ടികളോട് വലിയ സ്നേഹമായതുകൊണ്ടു ഇടയ്ക്കു പോയി നക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും. ഒരിക്കൽ ഒരാൾ വേറെയൊരു കുതിരയെ കൊണ്ടുവന്നു. രണ്ടുകുതിരകളും പരസ്പരം നോക്കി അസ്വസ്ഥരായി. ഇത്രയും നാൾ കുതിര വിചാരിച്ചിരുന്നത് താനൊരു പശുവാണെന്നാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ട് ആദ്യമായി ഒരു കുതിരയെകണ്ടപ്പോൾ ക്ഷുഭിതനായി. നമുക്ക് ഒരു കണ്ണാടി വേണം നമ്മളെത്തന്നെ കാണുവാൻ. കണ്ണാടി ഒരു പ്രക്രിയയാണ്. അതു ആവശ്യമാണ്. കാപ്പികുടിക്കാൻ നമുക്കു കപ്പ് വേണം . നമ്മൾ കപ്പ് കുടിക്കുന്നില്ല. എന്നാൽ കപ്പിലാതെ കാപ്പികുടാനും പറ്റില്ല. ജ്യൂസ്‌ കുടിക്കാൻ സ്ട്രൗ (പ്ലാസ്റ്റിക് കുഴൽ) വേണം പക്ഷെ സ്ട്രൗ ആരും കഴിക്കാറില്ല. പക്ഷെ ചുണ്ടിനെയും കപ്പിനെയും ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്നത് സ്ട്രൗ ആണ്.

Question:Buddha said,be your inner light,so why are the spirituality courses and techniques needed?

@SriSri : You have to listen to Buddha.Buddha had to come and tell you,be light unto yourself.Right?So that is a technique.Once in Rishikesh,they built a four story building and there were mounds around because Rishikesh is a hilly area,so after the completion of the four storey building,they cleared the mound that was around.When that was cleared,suddenly they realised that there were no steps to the first floor.Because of the mound everyone was going through the mound. All the materials were carried through the mound.When the mound was cleared,from the ground floor there were no steps to the first floor.There were steps only from there onwards .

Like that I was thinking when people say no need of techniques,guru and all that,then what is the need of this question?right?Where is the need of an answer?If you were a bird ,you don't need steps to go,but even a bird needs wings and should know how to flutter it's wings.They learn how they should fly.And they need training.If a bird had no bird around it,if they had just seen cats and kittens around,they would think they were one among them,they would not flutter wings and fly.

We have a horse in the ashram,and the horse is in the cowshed.It is so friendly with all the cows,it will go and lick them.And somebody brought another horse,and they got upset looking at each other.It looked like the horse thought it is a cow,when the first time it saw another horse,it became very wild.So you need a mirror to look at yourself,and the mirror is the technique.It is needed.To drink coffee you need a cup, right?You don't drink the cup.But without the cup also ,you can't drink coffee.You need a straw to have juice.But nobody eats the straw.But there is a connection between the cup and the lip through the straw.
